Kleifeld's Restaurant

Downtown Willoughby, Ohio.
Sign on brick side of the building says: “Good Coffee Always”
Great small lunch counter—food/prices nothing special. But good coffee. Great Floor! Old counter with elbow spots, Bunn-omatic, stainless steel. No radio! Old Seeburg 200 Wall-O-Matic. Cool bathroom downstairs.

Oddly enough, Kleifeld's is still there in Willoughby -- at least I THINK it is.. the sign is definitely still there anyway. In the intervening nearly-20 years, downtown Willoughby has undergone some serious 'gentrification'/renewal and is now quaint as fu.. er, as all-get-out. What was once a cool weird old hardware store with a stained glass window is now a big yuppified coffee-shop which at least had the good sense to keep the cool old window.

I haven't eaten in Kleifelds in probably nearly as long as you have, but when I lived, briefly, about 2 blocks away from it, right around 1989 or 90 until sometime in 92, I did eat there occasionally, just because it was a cool old place. The food was nothing special at all that I can remember. For a long time, I thought its name was actually "Klinefeld's", thinking it was somehow maybe related to our friend Jim Clinefelter, but I think my mistake was in wanting to see something familiar and assuming it was so. Like when I thought I was living in a building called "The Pontiac" for a long time until it was pointed out to me that it was actually called "THE PONITAC", a name which was seemingly made up specifically for that building.

Anyway, I'm still out near Kleifelds pretty regularly, so the next time I am, I'll try to inspectigate a little more closely to make sure they're still actualy a going concern.

Nice to see this review though!

Kleifelds is still there! I live in downtown Willoughby & the surrounding area my whole life. I have nothing but great things to say about the restraunt. The food may be nothing special, but I think what makes it special is that there are no gimmicks. The prices rock & the service is always great. It's very homey & reminiscent of what Historical Downtown Willoughby is & used to be!
