John's Diner

Lakewood, OH. On Detroit (near Rocky River)—Open Sunday—Hard to recognize it as a diner on the outside—easy to miss—small sign—but it says “Diner." Beautiful diner inside—old wood, curved roof—kind of nautical—or real old train-like—blue tile w/red stripes—great marble counter—sausage gravy and biscuits!

John's is still there. New additions inside include a sign saying, "ASK ABOUT OUR HEALTHY STIR-FRY".

We used to eat here pretty regularly when I first moved back to Lakewood 3-4 years ago, but after a while, I think they got a batch of really bad cooks in there, and the last time we ate there, everything just tasted *awful*.

buh - actually I wasn't even done with that.

I was going to say that the home-fries, which had traditionally been one of the very best things about John's, to the extent that you could just go in there and order a plate of home fries and be satisfied, were especially awful the last time we were there. Just unbelieveably bad.

I keep thinking I should go back there and give it another try, because it is such a cool old place, but I haven't had the nerve to yet. Maybe some weekend morning soon when I find myself alone.

As long as it's still there and is a diner, at least there's always hope. It's a nice structure.

Homefries are really hard to judge in a way, because people have such varying taste when it comes to how they're cooked. There isn't necessarily wrong and right, or even a solid consensus on what constitutes "homefries." I like mine really pretty greasy, too greasy for most people, I guess. And I like them cooked for way too long, but not burnt. The flavor of the grease itself then becomes really important because you're REALLY TASTING THE GREASE!
