Dimitri’s Family Restaurant

Lorain and W. 110th. Cleveland, OH. Insane portions. Carpet is an art work.

Yes, the carpet at Dimitri's is still totally insane. Looks like vintage 1940s-style nightclub palm-tree-leaves design - or the kind of insane pattern they use on cruise ships to supposedly help you from getting seasick that actually promotes seasickness somehow.

We ate here sometime last winter, the first time I'd been back there in probably like ten years or more. It was late at night, and at the table next to us was a huge family of what looked like ultra-rural folks who had apparently come in from like 20 miles out into the country to go to some big prayer-revival meeting. They were having a huge feast, and looked at Kat and I as if we were the most forlorn people on the planet. They were like looking at us and shaking their heads and you could hear them saying things like 'God save them' and stuff like that. Really weird.

I can't at all remember the food. We haven't been back since.

I think I've asked before, but the restaurant that's on Detroit and now called My Friends also used to be called Dimitri's, or maybe Dmitri's, a long time ago too. I dont' remember if you said you remembered it or not.

I can't remember a Dimitri's on Detroit, but my notes may reveal something eventually.

There are tons of these kinds of Greek immigrant owned family restaurants in Milwaukee, and some of them have very good food, even, and some not so good, but always huge portions and not cheap enough. They are very popular with the after church crowd, and I suppose the after casino crowd. The style is very Las Vegas. The high rollers and the holy rollers, you know what they have in common? THEY'RE THE SAME PEOPLE!

I made the error of ordering "pie a la mode" at Dimitri's - it WAS expressed on the menu that way. The waitress was a beautiful girl, but also a "city goat" (hillbilly). Ellie May shrieked at the top of her lungs (insert twang/drawl here), "PIE A LA MODE! PIE A LA MODE! HEY EVRBUDDY, THIS FELLA WANTS IIICE CREEEAM ON HIS PIE AN' HE ASKED FOR PIE A LA MODE!"
Delightful, not to mention appetizing.
