Somewhere on Euclid (by CSU), Cleveland, OH.
Good menu—lot of stuff. Insane layout—weird, curved counter. Busy, popular at lunchtime. Old photos on the wall, portraits, of who? Club sandwiches are great—huge. “Clevelander” sandwich is goose liver, and only about $2.00. Great.

Oh man, I used to love this place when I worked downtown in the eary 90s! It was so totally straight of like the early 60s or something - yes, I totally remember the oddly-shaped "modern"-style counter there.. I really don't remember anything at all about their food, I assume it was just probably standard-issue downtown lunchcounter food. I think I only ever really ate there a handful of times, it was really kind of a long walk for me from where I worked then, so it was a special trip to go out that way.. In a way I'm kind of surprised this one isn't there anymore, I don't know why. It's too bad though..
Hey, guess what?
I *think* the Hi Luncheonette is still there, because I ate there JUST THIS AFTERNOON. It's now called Johnny's Deli, if it's the same place, and they're open Monday through Saturday (I think Saturday..) from .. erh.. early sometime, until 2:30 pm.
Kat & I got there at about 2:15, and they said, 'Just so you know, we close in 15 minutes..' - we asked if there was still time for us to eat, and they said, 'Oh, sure, no problem!'
The menu was average, but they did have veggie burgers on it, so that's what we got, but we forgot to tell them to put anything on them, so they just came as a plain fried (deep fried maybe) veggie burger patty on a bun, with a good portion of decent fries. If I had thought about it, I would have asked for cheese and lettuce and tomato and pickle, but I didn't feel like asking for those things afterwards. It was still pretty good, with a dollop of ketchup & mustard anyway. It was kinda pricey, coming to $15.50 for the two of us - I think they charged extra for the fries, which seems kind of antithetical to the whole downtown lunch concept to me, but it was cool eating in this place again. It really looked pretty much exactly the same as I remember it - weird curved-around counter, lots of tile, little tiles, everywhere. Big mirror on one wall. We actually sat in a little booth on the far side of the curved counter at the very end of it (a sign said, "3 or more only, 7:00 am to 1:00 pm" so we were ok..).
I seem to recall there being another place called Johnny's down there somewhere, but I wonder if maybe that Johnny bought out Hi, or maybe I'm just dreaming the whole thing.
I'd really like to have breakfast there sometime, if I ever manage to get down there early enough at some point.. I'm just glad to know that the place still exists!
I'm glad to hear that is still there, if it's the same place-- it sounds like it. Cleveland was SO CHANGED that last time I explored downtown, I almost couldn't take it. But there has to be SOME of my favorite stuff left, right?
"3 or more only" in a booth! That is crazy, and pretty hardcore. I've seen two or more, a lot, which makes sense, but three?
I wonder if they still have goose liver? I'm sure it's not that cheap, if they do. Maybe it's now $78 dollars for a sandwich. Are photo portraits still on the wall? Who are they? No reason to look, just make it up: Cleveland Amory, Grover Cleveland, Grover...
