Clifton Lunch

Corner Clifton and W. 117. Cleveland, OH. Not real great food or atmosphere—food is average price—below average food, but I wouldn’t quite say BAD. Atmosphere is "bad hillbilly"—could be better at some other time. Probably the best experience you’ll have with this place is walking by looking in the window.

Note: This place has long since closed, and a new, much nicer restaurant opened in the same spot. I ate there once, and they were generous enough to give me extra homefries in place of the toast I declined. But I don't remember the name of the place!

The new name of the Clifton Lunch is just the Clifton Diner. They've remodelled the insides with some crazy new-wave-looking formica stuff, but put in newer retro-looking diner counter stools and booths and stuff. There was a fire in their kitchen about a year or so ago too, and they were closed for a few months, and we were kinda worried that it was just some kinda insurance fraud thing so they could just close up, but they reopened, happily. The Diner is a *great* improvement over the old Lunch - I couldn't even get good *toast* in the old Lunch. The Diner has some of the very best omelettes in town, and their home fries are really great too. I wish they had more vegetarian options there - I really hate giant mushrooms, and this is one of those kind of places that instead of having like gardenburgers or some other kind of veggieburger, they just have the portabella mushroom burgers, which totally gross me out. But their breakfasts are top notch!

Ate here at 3 in the morning back in the 80's. Place was full of leather boys who looked like refugees from the Village People - bare pierced nipples, leather vests, black leather officers hats, and large mustaches...
An unfortunate waitress dropped a plate which shattered loudly.
The patrons began chanting "diesel dyke, diesel dyke" in unison.
Surreal...like a scene from a John Waters film.
